With the start of the New Year comes new beginnings. As you draft your New Year’s resolutions, consider the benefits of decluttering. By decluttering your home, you can create more room physically and emotionally. Instead of drowning in things you don’t need, start 2019 with the happiness that comes from simplifying your life. Here are some easy tips on how to start decluttering your home:
1. Know what clutter is.
Even things that are organized and nicely decorated may still be clutter. Keeping a collection of items you never use but keep around “just in case” is one example. Having less leads to more. When you free up space, you will make way for creativity and inspiration.
2. Know what decluttering isn’t.
Decluttering is not organizing. Accumulating more items and putting them in order does not free up space. It only takes up more time and energy.
3. Start with one room at a time.
Decluttering can be an overwhelming process. Start with one room at a time to prevent moving things from one room to the next. If you stay focused on one room, you will be able to see your progress. That will motivate you to keep going.
4. Have a “maybe” box.
When decluttering, start with four boxes; a box for trash, a donation box, a box for things you would like to keep and a “maybe” box. Often when decluttering, you may not be 100% sure on what you want to do with certain items. Put the items you are uncertain about in the “maybe” box for a couple of weeks and then relook at the items to make a final decision.
